A hammered dulcimer originating in Hungary. Strings, which are stretched over a soundboard, are hit by hammers covered by cotton wool. There is a small portable cimbalom and a larger type which has a pedal similar to a piano.

Also known as the santur or santoor. This instrument is a hammered dulcimer, and has two types: the Indian and the Persian Santoor. The Persian santoor is wider than the box-like Indian version. Both are wooden stringed instruments played by hitting the strings with a light mallet.
